GREATEST COMPLIMENT
“If
your descendants watch how they live, and if they walk faithfully
before me with all their heart and soul, you will never fail to have a
successor on the throne of Israel.” – 1 Kings 2:4
One
of the most influential person in my life was my grandfather. He always
had a clever piece of advice or fascinating story to share.
I still remember our most interesting conversation. He said that the
greatest praise he had ever received came from an old colleague. After
more than 30 years, they finally saw each other again. After introducing
their families, his friend said, “You are very good. You raised great
children and they raised great grandchildren for you. Your family will
continue to grow beautifully.”
It was moving because, quite often, our favorite compliments are about
our careers, our personalities or looks or the material things we own.
My grandfather, however, always insisted that his family defined his
achievement in life and was proof of God’s blessing. He believed that
those who had lived their lives in virtue and kindness would be given a
lasting lineage full of love, happiness and wealth, one that was averse
to misery and suffering.
This means we must set an example for those who succeed us so that they
may also live their lives as a testament to God’s Word. It is our next
generation that will guide our future in the right direction. Eleanore Teo (elyo.lee@gmail.com)
Reflection: Are you setting an example for the next generation?
Lord, I look up to You in faith and You have never disappointed me. Let me be that same shining light to those around me.
Sts. Paul Miki and Companions, martyrs, pray for us.
