LIGHT OF THE WORLD
Because of his affliction he shall see the light... – Isaiah 53:11
Malcolm Muggeridge took his TV crew to Calcutta in the Home for the Dying Destitute to film Blessed Mother Teresa’s work. The interior of the Home had inadequate lighting, the light coming only from two small windows high up in the walls. The crew only had a small light with them so it was impossible to clearly capture the scene on film, but they decided to have a go. As a backup, the cameraman also took shots outside where the residents were sitting under the sun.
When the film was processed, “the part taken inside was bathed in a particularly beautiful soft light, whereas the part taken outside was rather dim and confused.” Muggeridge recounted in his book, Something Beautiful for God.
God so loved us that He gave us His only Son. Jesus’ sacrificial love on the cross brought light and hope to this dark world mired in sin. In the same way, Muggeridge was convinced that it was love that illuminated that dimly lit room. And Blessed Mother Teresa’s “light” of influence eventually made him and his wife convert to Catholicism years later. Judith Concepcion (svp_jmc@yahoo.com)
Reflection: “… But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, for everything that becomes visible is light” (Ephesians 5:13-14). Let Jesus, the Light of the World, dispel the darkness within you so you may live as children of light.
Lord Jesus, may Your light shine upon me so I may reflect the light of Your love and goodness to others.
St. Luke, evangelist, pray for us.
