FOOD PUSHER
Peter began to say to him, “We have given up everything and followed you.” – Mark 10:28
Working on the March 2011 issue of Kerygma,
the theme of which was “Break Free from Bad Habits,” I realized I still
have a lot of bad habits that I need to let go of. These include eating
a lot of sweets, nuts, chips and junk food. I do not only eat them — I
stock a lot of it beside my bed and in my office cabinet, and share them
with my family and my office mates. Because of this, I have earned the
title of a “food pusher” in the office.
A
deeper look into myself brought to the surface a truth: that there is a
vacuum inside me that I had been trying to fill, albeit unconsciously,
with food.
And
what is this vacuum? A vacuum brought about by prioritizing work over
relationships, by spending less and hurried time with the Lord in prayer
every day, and by missing the daily Eucharist that I love so much.
Following the Lord entails realigning one’s priorities — God and people before anything else.
Little by little, I am filling up my vacuum by the right “food” again. Tess V. Atienza (svp_tvatienza@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
What holds you back from totally following God?
Lord, help me to let go of material things in my life and embrace Your kingdom more fully.
St. Callistus I, pope and martyr, pray for us.
