IN OUR STEAD
Christ
ransomed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for
it is written, “Cursed be everyone who hangs on a tree…” – Galatians
3:13
With this verse I remember the movie In the Name of the Father, a 1993 Daniel Day- Lewis starrer.
The
son, a petty thief played by Lewis, was implicated in an IRA bombing.
He and his father were put behind bars for a crime they didn’t commit.
The father was all too willing to suffer in his son’s place so that his
son could be released. Unfortunately, they were imprisoned for 15 years,
with the father dying in jail.
I
got out of the theater with puffy eyes and feeling so angry at the
injustice I had seen, especially because the film was based on a true
story. It showed the extent of what a father can do to save his son’s
life, even if it means taking the blame for a grave crime. Jesus did the
same to save mankind from death. He committed no crime, yet He was
tried and convicted like a criminal — a cursed one. The only difference
between this and the film: We are guilty of sin. We should be the ones
hanging on the cross, but Jesus silently suffered in our stead in order
to fulfill His Father’s will.

REFLECTION:
Every sin we commit is one nail driven into Jesus’ hands and feet.
All thanks to You, Lord Jesus, for Your great love for me. May I honor You every day with my life.
Our Lady of Pillar, pray for us.
