DON’T PLAY THE PART
— LIVE IT
All their works are performed to be seen... – Matthew 23:5
Any good actor knows that in order to play his part well, he would have
to internalize the character — the traits, manner of speaking,
mannerisms, etc. But after acting the part, when the lights, sounds and
camera are turned off, and when the audience have applauded, he retires
his roles like the costumes he wore. It was all for show.
Sometimes, we live life the same way — saying the right words, doing
the good deeds, being the right person — all for public portrayal and
praise without the sincerity, virtue or integrity required. We do it for
the photo op that we can post on Facebook. In truth, there’s a wide gap
between who we are and how we want people to see us.
Let’s close this gap by disregarding perceived public opinions of our
person, and instead discover our approval in Christ who made the
ultimate expression of affirmation by giving up His life for us. When we
do, we realize that people-pleasing is pointless in the light of a God
who is already well-pleased with us. Thus, whatever role God has
entrusted you with, don’t play the part — live it. Mike Viñas (mikemichaelfcv@yahoo.com)
Reflection: There’s only one role for God’s casting call — to be like Jesus. Take on the character of Christ.
Father, mold Me to authentically and totally be more like Your Son, Jesus.
St. Katharine Drexel, pray for us.
