MANAGEMENT, JESUS
STYLE
“You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them... It shall not be so among you...” – Matthew 20:25-26
It was a team building seminar, one of the first initiatives of
Shepherd’s Voice Publications’ new president, Hermie Morelos. We
listened to talks, played games, had group activities and countless
photo ops and selfies.
We learned a lot about ourselves and our coworkers. We refreshed our
memories about our corporate mission and vision. We recalled why we were
serving in this ministry in the first place.
It felt more like a retreat that was work-oriented.
But what touched me the most was what happened on the last day. Our new
president asked all 40 of us employees to remove our name tags. Then he
called us by name, saying a line or two about each one.
I’ve been working in the company for over 10 years and I didn’t even
know everyone by name. That one act conveyed that he was a leader who
would rule not by fear or authority, but by friendship.
I’m sure I wasn’t alone in holding back my tears that day. Rissa Singson Kawpeng (justbreatherissa@gmail.com)
Reflection: Is it better for a leader to be loved or feared?
Jesus, teach us to lead the way You did — by example and out of love.
St. Casimir, pray for us.
