A DROP IN THE OCEAN
Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. – Romans 8:1
I was walking along the beach one day and I decided to pick up a few stones to see how far out to sea I could throw them. I hurled one so far that I didn’t even see it hit the water. I was captivated by the vastness of the ocean before me.
I’ve committed a lot of sins in my life. A number of them, I said to myself I’d never get into — but I did. For a long time, I condemned myself. I walked around with a heavy heart and a guilty conscience.
One time I went to confession, the priest told me that God allows us to experience failure so we will know His mercy. After confessing my sins, he told me that my penance was simply to be grateful for my blessings. Instead of focusing on my sin, he asked me to focus on the goodness in my life. That helped me a lot.
Our sins are like a mere drop in the ocean of God’s mercy. God notices them, but He doesn’t focus on them. He focuses on our potential — on the vast goodness in us that comes from His overflowing heart. He doesn’t want us to be complacent about sin, but He does want us to always remember that His forgiveness is ready and available for those who sincerely repent and return to Him. Reflection: Nothing can separate us from His love.
Lord, I repent of my sin and return to You now. Thank You for Your love that does not condemn.
Blessed Contrado Ferrini, pray for us.
