THE GUIDING RULE
“Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?” —Luke 6:2
It was the consecration part of the Mass. Everyone knelt as a sign of reverence except my mom who remained standing because kneeling would strain her knees and spine. During communion time, a lady couldn’t help but ask her why she didn’t kneel. My mom explained to her that she had a back problem and exposed her back brace, which was concealed under her blouse.
I had no idea what was going on in that lady’s mind that prompted her to ask my mom. Was it just mere curiosity or did she pass judgment that my mom was irreverent by not kneeling down? Only God knew.
In today’s Gospel, the Pharisees accused Jesus’ disciples of breaking the Sabbath law because they picked the heads of grain, rubbed them in their hands and ate them. According to Pharisaic law, gathering grain was one method of harvesting and was, therefore, considered as work. Jesus argues that satisfying human needs like hunger is more important than human rules and regulations.
We can be Pharisaical when it comes to the practice of our faith. But like Jesus, if we let love be our guiding rule in everything, we can never go wrong. Judith Concepcion (svp_jmc@yahoo.com)
Reflection: Are we so concerned about strict compliance with rules and regulations that we lose sight of what is essential?
Cleanse me, Lord, from all self-righteousness. Teach me how to love like You do.
