MORE FUN IN THE
PHILIPPINES!
It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. – Luke 2:26
In
2012, the tourism slogan, “It’s more fun in the Philippines!” caught
on. Tourist arrivals increased as targeted. The slogan reflected what
was unique in our country.
There is never a time that this tagline is more true than the Christmas
season. Ours is the longest celebration and probably the most festive.
Simbang gabi. Puto-bumbong and bibingka. The fireworks. The endless
family reunions. The gift giving. Our malls dressed up for the season.
The caroling. The list goes on and on...
No people in Asia — even in the world — appreciates the Christmas season like we do.
But as I write about this “love affair” of the Filipinos with this
season, I wonder if we have the same (or much more) love for its Reason —
Jesus.
In today’s Gospel, Simeon was given a message that he would see the
Messiah before his life ends. Today as I reflect on this, I pray that I
may see the Lord Jesus before this season ends.
Before this day ends. Before every moment ends. Ariel Driz (adriz77@yahoo.com)
Reflection: What obstacles keep you from seeing Jesus at every moment of every day?
Lord Jesus, You are the Reason for the season, You are the Reason for my life. May I live each moment for You! Amen.

Trust in the Lord and surrender all the areas of your life, known and unknown - Daily Bible Reflections December 28,2014
Feast of the Holy Family
VICTORY IN
SURRENDER
By
faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice.
Abraham reasoned that God could even raise the dead, and so... he did
receive Isaac back from death. – Hebrews 11:17, 19
When
the Israelites first fled Egypt under the direction of Moses, they
brought everyone and everything with them. They also brought with them a
hope that they would never have to return to a life of bondage and
slavery. But along their journey to the Promised Land, many challenges
happened that led them to question God and His plans. Consequently, many
of them didn’t enter the Promised Land.
I believe that it was their lack of complete surrender that was their
downfall — that even though their physical bodies left Egypt, the
presence of Egypt never left their hearts.
We still have our own versions of Egypt today— bad habits, a
temptation, an addiction or a situation that enslaves us and keeps us
from moving forward.
Whatever our Egypt is, we must surrender and expose it to God’s light
if we want to genuinely exterminate it. Surrender is genuine, voluntary
and wholehearted. May you find victory in surrender today! Audee Villaraza (avillaraza@gmail.com)
Reflection:
Trust in the Lord and surrender all the areas of your life, known and
unknown. Offer it to Him like Abraham, who boldly offered Isaac as a sacrifice.
I want to learn how to trust You completely, Lord. Bring me opportunities where I can grow more in faith and trust.
Holy Family, pray for us.

A seed never grows in a day, neither does a baby develop overnight. So why do you expect your prayer to be answered instantly? - God Whispers December 23,2014
A seed never grows in a day, neither does a baby develop overnight. So why do you expect your prayer to be answered instantly?
Enjoy every minute of the journey,

P.S. You must have patience to do My will and receive My promise (Hebrews 10:36).
Never question the Lord’s calling or choice. Who would have thought He’d choose a poor, young girl to be the mother of the Messiah? - Daily Bible Reflections December 23,2014
YES, YES, LORD!
All the ways of the Lord are loving and faithful toward those who keep the demands of his covenant. – Psalm 25:10
After almost three to four hours of travel, I approached the venue, Our
Lady of Ransom Parish in Tarlac City. I felt all the more uneasy and
nervous. Who wouldn’t be when I would be standing before 500 attendees
from different prayer groups and places, with the Infant Jesus Catholic
Community heading the event?
Head Servant Bro. Nath Gomez invited me to give my life testimony after he had read my Didache reflections.
At the venue, seeing the huge crowd gave me goose-bumps and made my
stomach flutter. It was no joke to stand before them and share about my
23 years of incarceration at the Correctional Institution for Women.
“There’s nothing like being separated from your loved ones — more so
from your children, whom you can’t even touch or embrace when they are
sick,” I shared as tears flowed down my cheeks. In the audience, many
mothers were crying with me, too.
I sometimes wonder why I’m often invited to share my testimony when
there are others who are more deserving. But who am I to question His
will? Yes, Lord, send me where You want me to go to do what You want me
to do. Beth A. Corral (bethcorral_0330@yahoo.com)
Reflection:
Never question the Lord’s calling or choice. Who would have thought
He’d choose a poor, young girl to be the mother of the Messiah?
Use my life, Lord, to bless many others.

Hold on to God’s promise and never doubt that He always delivers - Daily Bible Reflections December 22,2014
A CHILD IS COMING
“The Lord has filled my heart with joy; how happy I am because of what he has done!” – 1 Samuel 2:1
After years of frustration, Hannah’s prayer for motherhood has finally come to
pass. In the Gospel, a pregnant Mary rejoiced with her long-barren
cousin Elizabeth, who was also with child. These stories speak strongly
to me and my wife.
Three years ago, our prayer for parenthood had been granted. After
failing a fertility procedure and being told there was no way for me and
my wife to get pregnant naturally, we found ourselves with child. It
was truly a miracle. And when our doctor was calculating the date we
conceived, we found out that it happened on December 25, 2011— a
Christmas gift indeed. But after eight weeks, the heartbeat of our child
suddenly stopped. No reason. No explanation. The miracle was over. The
gift that was given was suddenly taken away. “Why?” This question
haunted us for a long time.
But the Lord has promised me that I am destined to be a father. And I
am holding on to that promise. And I know, without a speck of doubt in
my heart, that I will be proclaiming the same prayers that Hannah and
Mary offered God. Orange V. Garcia (orange_garcia@hotmail.com)
Reflection:
Do you have a dream that has not come to pass? Do you have a blessing
that was suddenly withdrawn from you? Hold on to God’s promise and never
doubt that He always delivers.
Lord,
teach me to be grateful for the life You have given me — including the
frustrations and imperfections. Teach me to continue to believe.

Are you facing a tough decision? Seek His kingdom first - Daily Bible Reflections December 21,2014
SAFE
“Go, do whatever you have in mind, for the Lord is with you.” – 2 Samuel 7:3
“I
cannot control everything. I can only choose to trust that the Lord
will take care of my children wherever they may be.” Such were the words
of the man whom I now call my father-in-law. Both his son and daughter
(my wife) left for abroad after college to pursue further studies. I
asked him if he ever got worried about them. That was his reply.
My sister has just left for a three-month fellowship program in Poland.
The hospital happens to be in a rough area and she’s the only Filipino
doctor there. We don’t have any friends there,
either. At first, I was a bit hesitant and, admittedly, a bit scared.
But I chose to embrace my father-in-law’s mentality and entrusted my
sister to the Lord’s care. More than physical safety, I know she will
make the right decisions because her conscience has been formed through
years of serving God with my family. Life is full of decisions. We will
all
have to go down different paths. No matter what choice we make, if we
have made God the Lord of our lives, I’m confident we’ll be alright.

Reflection: Are you facing a tough decision? Seek His kingdom first.
Lord, guide me in everything I do.

SOMETHING MORE
IMPORTANT
But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, because your prayer has been heard.” – Luke 1:13
One day, I received a text message from my leader in our prayer
community. It said, “Would you like to give the talk this Sunday?”
Suddenly, my heart pounded, my stomach churned, and my mind went
haywire! Almost everything in me said: “Noooo!” I was taken over by
fear. All my “what if’s” and “yeah, but’s” came to mind. But despite
these fears, I heard myself replying, “Sure! It’s an honor and
privilege.”
The day came. As I began the talk, I imagined the audience saying, “Who
is this person? Why should I listen to him?” But I went on despite the
seemingly unsuccessful battle within me. I felt that whatever was
negatively affecting me was less important than the message I wanted to
share. By the end of my talk, I saw hands in the air, tears in some
eyes, and voices proclaiming praise to our God. The Lord won the battle
for me.
As we anticipate Christmas, put yourself in the shoes of the Father who
had to let go of His only Beloved Son to save the world. I would be
afraid to send the one I love to go through pain and suffering. But for
God, it was love, not fear, that made Him go all the way for you and me.
Jonathan Yogawin (jyogawin@gmail.com)

Open your eyes and ears. God is speaking to you! - Daily Bible Reflections December 18,2014
GOD’S MESSAGE
When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife into his home. – Matthew 1:24
God used the Angel Gabriel to send His message to Joseph. Today, He
uses many different ways. He even speaks to us through famous
advertising slogans. Take the following and see if they speak God’s
message to you:
“Where do you want to go today?” “Para kanino ka bumabangon?” “What drives you?”
Through these slogans, God is asking: Are you living life for Me? The
following are even very similar to Bible verses: “You’re in good hands.”
The Lord reminds us that we are in the palm of His hands (Isaiah 49:16).
“Just do it.” Let’s heed Mary’s words to just do as He tells us (John 2:5).
“May liwanag ang buhay.” Know that God’s Light is there to guide us (John 8:12).
“Magpakatotoo ka!” (Be truthful). Are we faced with the temptation to tell a lie or compromise the truth? God is giving us a nudge right now (John 8:32).
There are many ways that God tries to reach us — through the Bible, the
Mass, the sacraments, angels or angels in disguise; through slogans,
people, circumstances and even missent text messages. This Christmas
season, let’s be attuned to His voice and receive His message. Jun Asis (mabuting.balita@gmail.com)
Reflection: Open your eyes and ears. God is speaking to you!
Lord, open my heart today that I may see and hear what You have to say.

Think hard about this fact: Trials and pains are necessary in our lives - Daily Bible Reflections December 17,2014
BRING ON THE TRIALS!
... and peace abound, until the moon is no more. – Psalm 72:7
This magnificent sight gave me a
practical lesson in life. The famous Blue Mountains of Australia are
blue — not poetically but literally. At a scenic point in this mountain
range, I marveled at its unique spectacle. I found out that the mountains were filled with gum trees, the leaves of which koalas
feed on. These trees emit a vapor which gives the mountains its azure shade in sunlight.
There is another thing about the gum trees that I took interest in:
their seeds. I learned that these seeds pop open when exposed
to extreme heat, like a forest fire. In fact, when a forest fire breaks
out, it revitalizes the whole mountain because more seeds pop open and new gum trees are born.
Such also is life. Sirach 4:2 says, “In fire gold is tested,” meaning
we need to go through trials or “fire” so that our values are enhanced.
Trials, like forest fires, give new life and strengthened
endurance. Through trials, we discover that there is a God who is
faithful. When the tests and trials come, we have peace and will have
the boldness to declare that we have a God who is greater than our
trials! Rolly España (rolly@homeliving.com.ph)
Reflection: Think hard about this fact: Trials and pains are necessary in our lives.

MISSING McDO
“Then the father went to the other son and said the same thing. He answered, ‘I will, sir,’ but he did not go.” – Matthew 21:30
Roger
was a successful businessman. That’s probably why a neighbor approached
him and asked if he wanted to be involved in a new hamburger chain he
was starting. He offered Roger the fourth franchise. Roger’s dad, who
was himself an astute businessman, said, “Take it!”
Roger thought about it but later on turned down the deal. He must have
regretted that decision when that startup burger joint, named McDonalds,
became the giant chain it is today. He was on the brink of so much
wealth, but he missed it because of one decision: He ignored his
father’s smart advice.
You may be on the edge of one monumental and life-changing blessing
right now. You may be on the threshold of something big that God wants
to give you. It may be an emotional treasure, a financial blessing, the
answer to a longtime prayer, a special relationship, a new beginning,
maybe a greater impact in your ministry, or a breakthrough in some
impossible situation. But, like that man who missed his share of Ronald
McDonald’s fortune, it may all come down to your making the right
decision. Will you avoid sin and obey God, or ignore Him and have it
your way? Jon Escoto (faithatworkjon@gmail.com)

“He guides the humble in righteousness, and teaches the humble his way.” (Psalm 25:9) - Daily Bible Reflections December 15,2014
STOP TRYING,
START TRUSTING
Make
known to me your ways, Lord; teach me your paths. Guide me by your
fidelity and teach me, for you are God my savior... – Psalm 25:4-5
Have
you ever felt like everything was just coming to you left and right all
at the same time? When your to-do list seems never-ending and your
pending box is piling up to the moon?
Earlier this year, I had a week like that. I was swamped with so much
to do for work and ministry and I felt like I was drowning in a sea of
deadlines. To top it off, I even had a talk to prepare for that Sunday. I
was overwhelmed, stressed and desperately trying to balance everything
on my own. Then a Voice from above spoke to my heart. “Stop trying,
start trusting.”
Quickly, I realized that I was trying to do things my way and on my own
ability. I was reminded not to rely on my own strength and
understanding, but rather to trust and lean on God’s limitless ability.
Thus, when I began to put my faith in Him rather than in myself, I felt a
huge weight lifted from my shoulders. Eventually, the self-imposed
pressure subsided and I was able to accomplish all my deliverables
successfully. Mike Viñas (mikemichaelfcv@yahoo.com)
Reflection: “He guides the humble in righteousness, and teaches the humble his way.” (Psalm 25:9)

We Christians are called to testify to the Light. Be John the Baptist to someone who needs hope today - Daily Bible Reflections December 14,2014
Third Sunday of Advent
CANDICE
He came for testimony, to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. – John 1:7
Candice
asked me if I had kids. I told her I didn’t have any, and that my
husband and I are having difficulty conceiving. She must have seen the
discouraged look on my face because she started speaking of good things
to uplift my spirits.
What kind of things? She spoke passionately about the love of God,
about keeping the faith in His divine providence, and about patience for
His timing.
Candice’s testimony reminded me that God knows my heart’s desires and
that I should appreciate the blessings that come our way while waiting
for that gift from heaven. She even said that ours was not a chance
encounter, that there was a purpose for our meeting. I believed so, too.
Candice was my John the Baptist that day. Who was she? An
African-American woman who stepped out of their house to say hello to my
husband and me when we checked out a car that her brother was selling. I
may never see her again, but I will definitely remember her and her
precious words. Nova Arias-Sevilla (nova.svp@gmail.com)

Whatever God is asking you to do, trust that it will result into something spectacular even when it doesn’t make sense today. Do yourself a favor, give your yes - Daily Bible Reflections December 12, 2014
Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe
A DREAM FULFILLED
But she was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. – Luke 1:29
I
loved being a TV reporter and pinch-hitter anchor. I was even blessed
to do a report for CNN. Staying with the network was my ticket to make
my dream of hosting my own TV show a reality one day.
But in 2007, I heard God speak to me through my prayer time, Bible
reading and circumstances. “Resign and don’t plan.” What?!
Mary was greatly troubled too when the angel told her she would have a
baby even though she was a virgin. That didn’t make sense to her as
well. But she gave her yes immediately.
It took me two disturbed years before I finally resigned. It was painful. I lost my identity. I was a news person; who was I now?
But God was changing me. I had to lose my job for the Lord to make me
see that I had worshiped a different god in my heart — my work. I’d skip
Mass, birthdays and prayer time for my job.
God realigned my priorities. Everything started making sense. I found peace.
Then, the impossible happened. I was offered a TV show. Just like that. God was faithful even when I wasn’t.
Hosting this show is a temporary blessing. I have something permanent — the Giver of the blessing. Carlo Lorenzo (carloflorenzo@yahoo.com)
Reflection:
Whatever God is asking you to do, trust that it will result into

GREATNESS REVEALED
Whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. – Matthew 11:11
Once upon a time, there was a lump of clay who was not satisfied in being mediocre. Deep within his heart of clay, he knew he was destined for greatness.
He prayed, “Lord, make a way for my dream to come true!” Suddenly, a
hand grabbed him and put him in a container that went through a clay
sifter. He spun around on a turnstile where he was pressed and pressured
on every side. Then he was placed into a hot oven where he was cooked.
Afterwards, he was laid on a table and painted with various colors and
designs. Then the Man who subjected the lump of clay through all these,
smiled, sighed and said, “My dear lump of clay, forgive me for the pain I
caused you. But look at you now — you are a uniquely beautiful and
exquisite jar. From a lump, you are now
My masterpiece.”
Friends, if you’ve been going through a lot, don’t ask why. Instead, ask, “Why not?”
Accept God’s will with humility and openness because your true
greatness will be revealed in His Kingdom! For God has a plan for us —
to make us His Masterpiece. Obet Cabrillas (kpreacherobet@gmail.com)

God is never early or late. He is always on time - Daily Bible Reflections December 10,2014
THE WAITING GAME
Yet those who wait for the Lord will gain new strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles... – Isaiah 40:31
This
verse was my “battlecry” when I was single — because I would cry while I
battled with my emotions of impatience and despair. It had been 10 long
years of repeatedly giving up my boyfriend — and going back to him — in
my desire to follow the Lord. But here was the Lord telling me to wait
some more. I was no longer a spring chicken and yet the Lord made it
clear that this wasn’t the man for me. I was getting so impatient that I
was convincing God that this man would do.
I tried to change God’s mind by forcing my boyfriend to be active in
our prayer group. I even fasted for a week with the hope that God would
finally say he’s the one. But the song that kept playing in my car was,
“Wait, wait, wait on the Lord. You will understand in time why you must
wait.”
Oswald Chambers wrote, “When God gives you a vision and darkness
follows, wait. God will bring the vision He has given you to reality in
your life if you will wait on His timing. Never try to help God fulfill
His Word.”
In those 10 years, God broke my impatient streak and self-will, and
taught me how to wait on Him. He broke all my self-reliance and
dependence on others and taught me to rely on Him alone. And when God
saw I was ready, he brought my future husband into my life. Ronna Ledesma (ronna_ledesma@yahoo.com.ph)
Reflection: God is never early or late. He is always on time.
Father, thank You for rewarding with good things those who wait on You.

Did you ever ask the Lord that His will be done in you? Or are you asking Him to bless your will every time you pray? - Daily Bible Reflections December 9,2014
HIS WILL ABOVE ALL
“So it is not the will of my Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish.” – Matthew 18:14
When
we had the first group of seminarians sent to our parish for a month’s
immersion, we made it a point to pray for them even after they’d gone —
that they may stay on to become priests. For every BEC (Basic Ecclesial
Community) bukluran (cell
group), we were to pray regularly for the one assigned to them. Yet, we
heard of fallouts — one, two, then three… or perhaps more as of this
writing.
With the second batch of seminarians assigned to our parish, in spite
of our prayers, there were fallouts again. Some left barely a month
after they had finished their immersion.
By the third group, I was no longer as optimistic that all of them
would become priests. Oh yes, we continued to pray, but I accepted deep
inside that some may still have a change of heart. I reminded myself
that they will not “perish” if they do not continue on to priesthood.
There are many ways to serve the Lord and being a priest is just one of
them.
As long as we respond to God’s calling, we are doing His will. And that’s good enough for Him. Cristy Galang (cristy_cc@yahoo.com)
Reflection:
Did you ever ask the Lord that His will be done in you? Or are you
asking Him to bless your will every time you pray?
Lord Jesus, You know what’s best for me. Let my desires align with Your plans that I may pursue them.
St. Juan Diego, pray for us.
