FAITHFULNESS, NOT SUCCESS

Then He summoned His twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits to drive them out and to cure every disease and every illness. – Matthew 10:1

Her boyfriend of two years proposed marriage to her. Rather than feel ecstatic about it, she became disturbed. She began to doubt whether she was really meant for married life. After some soul searching and discernment of her vocation, she realized that God was calling her to serve Him in a special way — as a religious sister.
Not every one is called to a consecrated life but God calls us to preach the Good News in whatever vocation, state of life or job we are in. Jesus called His Twelve Apostles and instructed them on what to do to “announce” the message that God’s kingdom is at hand. We may not always succeed in our God-given mission of bringing people to the Lord. According to Fr. Michael Scanlan, T.O.R., “The goal is faithfulness to our Father’s Word, faithfulness to our call and to the work He has given us to do. Success is God’s business.”
What is your special call? Do what you are called to do faithfully and let God take care of the results. Judith Concepcion (svp_jmc@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
Do you have the case of “performance spirituality”? Are you more concerned with the results thinking that your effectiveness in your service for the Lord depends on it?

Lord, purify my motives in serving. Let love and faithfulness be my goal.

St. Benedict, abbot, pray for us.
