Memorial of the Queenship of the Virgin Mary

Learning from mary

“Thus, the last will be first, and the first will be last.” – Matthew 20:16

Today we celebrate the crowning love of a Son for His mother. In all the millennia, countless Christians have learned from her life and example.
Mary taught us give our lives over to His mercy and not trust in our material possessions. She trusted only in God as the anawim, the “poor of the Lord.” She prodded us to draw close to Jesus and know her Son.
She also taught us courage. As a parent, it’s unbearable to think of your innocent son being put to death. Yet Mother Mary endured that.
She would have been the last person any man would pick to bring Jesus into the world. But man didn’t choose her; God did. A poor uneducated teenager from an obscure village in a forgotten corner of Israel was chosen and she became everything good that anyone could have ever hoped for. The last became first, and fortunate are we today for that truth. Rod Velez (rod.velez@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
As you grow in your relationship with Jesus, what have you learned from the Blessed Mother?

Thank You, Lord, for the gift of our Mother Mary. May we learn from her humility, her courage, and most of all, her deep love and devotion to Jesus. Mother Mary, pray for us.

St. Andrew the Scot, pray for us.
