INCOME VS BLESSING
If you obey the commandments of the Lord your God... by loving the Lord your God, and walking in his ways, and by keeping his commandments... then... the Lord your God will bless you... – Deuteronomy 30:16
I’ve long believed that man determines his income but God determines his blessing. Income is just the money he makes. But blessing involves so much more.
My parents told me this story when they were building their first home. They had budgeted everything they would be earning, as well as all their other funds, to build a house. Still, they didn’t have enough to finish construction. But they went ahead anyway.
Throughout the construction phase and beyond, none of my siblings got sick. So the money they had budgeted for emergencies and medicines were intact. That extra went into the construction. When all the money ran out, Dad was walking at a parking lot and a P50-bill stuck to the leg of his pants. It was enough to buy the paint to finish the house.
There are so many blessings that do not fall under your income. Your car doesn’t break down. The dollar exchange rate goes down and so do the prices of commodities. Someone gives you a sack of rice. Your boss is kind so you don’t need to go to a spa every week to relax. All these are non-monetary benefits that add up to your blessings. Rissa Singson Kawpeng (justbreatherissa@gmail.com)
Reflection: Count your blessings today.
Jesus, open my eyes to see the countless ways You bless me each day.
