ONDOY, SENDONG AND PABLO
“And the flood came...” – Luke 17:27
Do you know these names? That’s what I ask our kababayanshere
in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) whenever I’m invited to speak at
their occasions. The destructive typhoons Ondoy, Sendong and Pablo and
other natural calamities that hit the Philippines in recent years have qualified us to be among the top five disaster-prone countries in the world.
Disasters are magnified when people are not prepared. And this applies to our finances as well. When a family doesn’t handle its money properly, that’s a disaster that carries a heavy social cost. That’s why here in the UAE, we are planting the seeds of financial literacy among OFWs through the
Pinoy W.I.S.E.
(Worldwide Initiative for Investments, Savings and Entrepreneurship)
Movement. The Bayanihan Council, the umbrella association of Filipino
organizations, spearheads this project.
Floods, calamities and trials will surely come into our lives. And for
this, Jesus reminds us to build on solid rock. When we anchor our lives
upon Him, come hell or high water, we are safe. Grace Relucio Princesa ( grprincesa@yahoo.com)
Reflection: The earth is God’s gift to us. Are you a steward of that gift?
Lord, may I remember to offer to You my love and care for the world that You gave us.
St. Dyfrig, bishop, pray for us.
